Bright orange stripes. Questionable parenting in a Disney film. A tendency to appear on everything from lunchboxes to garden centre mugs.

But one of their most interesting traits is much less well known: most clownfish spend their lives remarkably close to home.

Unlike many marine species that travel huge distances, clownfish form a close relationship with a single sea anemone and rarely stray far from it. The anemone provides protection from predators, while the clownfish helps keep the anemone clean and healthy. It's a partnership that has worked for millions of years.

In some cases, a clownfish may spend its entire life within a territory only a few metres across.

For a fish living in an ocean that covers more than 70% of the Earth's surface, that's quite a lifestyle choice.

Success Doesn't Always Mean Moving On

We're often told that progress means moving somewhere new.

A new job.

A new city.

A new postcode.

A new start.

Sometimes that's true. But not always.

Clownfish are a useful reminder that thriving and travelling aren't necessarily the same thing.

For many people, opportunity comes from being able to build a good life where they already are. Close to friends, family and community. In familiar surroundings. On home turf.

That's one of the reasons we find clownfish so interesting. They challenge the idea that success always involves moving on.

Small Fish, Big Ocean

Clownfish are small.

They're not particularly fast.

They're not especially powerful.

And they're certainly not at the top of the food chain.

Yet they survive and thrive because they've found the right environment and the right relationships.

There's probably a lesson in that somewhere.

The strongest communities, organisations and economies aren't built by a handful of exceptional individuals. They're built when ordinary people have the opportunity to flourish in the places they call home.

Home Turf

The clownfish illustration featured on our Home Turf T-shirt was inspired by this idea.

Not because we think people should never leave home.

But because nobody should have to.

Opportunity shouldn't depend on where you start.

Sometimes the goal isn't escaping your home turf. It's having the chance to thrive on it.

Shop Home Turf Men’s // Shop Home Turf Women’s

Clownfish rarely stray far from home.
